A wall-to-wall carpet is attached to the floor and cleaned in place. An area rug is a separate textile with a backing, fringes, dyes and often natural fibers like wool or silk, and it has soil packed into it from both sides. It needs to be handled off the floor, cleaned at the right moisture level for the fiber, and dried properly so the backing does not stay damp.

Dyes are the other reason. Hand-knotted and older rugs can bleed if they are hit with the wrong chemistry, and once colors run, they run. The rug gets assessed before anything is applied.

Rugs live where the traffic is: entryways, in front of the sofa, under the dining table. They take the first hit from everything coming in off a North Idaho winter — road sand, salt, snowmelt — and they catch food, drinks and pet accidents on top of it.

If the rug has a pad under it, the pad holds onto that material too, which is often the real source of a smell people blame on the rug.
